What is an example of a law case where someone who was likely guilty got off easy, or off as not guilty?

I'm writing an English paper about justice. My thesis is that justice is seen as an American ideal, but sometimes wealth and/or fame come in the way of it being executed thoroughly. I am using O.J. Simpson and Chris Brown as examples, but can anybody think of some less known cases that demonstrate this claim? A source would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!What is an example of a law case where someone who was likely guilty got off easy, or off as not guilty?
Instead of the usual wealth and fame, how about the other exception people pretend doesn't exist: cops always getting off?

Before the OJ Simpson case, you may remember the Rodney King beating. Four cops beating the living hell out of an unarmed man lying on his face, and not one convicted of a crime.

Within the last few years, New York police have gunned down unarmed people in several notable cases. Many of them were shot over 20 times. Amadou Diallo was shot a total of 41 times by cops who couldn't explain why they did it. And not one of them was convicted of anything.

A good theme would be: why does society consider police to be so unusually upstanding that they can be trusted to carry and use deadly force, but at the same time holds them to a lower-than-normal standard of conduct with that deadly force? No civilian could ever shoot anyone, let alone 41 times, without having to prove to a DA and grand jury that:

1) they or someone present was in immediate danger of death;

2) they did everything in their power to escape

3) any reasonable person would have acted the same.

Cops aren't burdened by this burden of proof for self-defense. A cop just has to say ';furtive gesture'; and all is forgiven. Try killing someone for a furtive gesture as a civilian and see what happens. That's upstanding for you.What is an example of a law case where someone who was likely guilty got off easy, or off as not guilty?
John DeLorean - a case of money talks

Scooter Libby - it's not what you know, it's who you know.
